Ped appt and Reading!

Let me start out by saying I LOVE our new pediatrician. He is wonderful. He spent 45 mins with us just for our getting to know you appointment. He said she is basically already on a 5 year old/kindergarten level across the board except for motor skills, which she is right around average on...just a bit advanced.

I was informed once again (last time was from our Librarian) that the local school system would not be a good fit for my child. He said there is no gifted programs at all due to the budget cuts that occurred years ago, and it is a shame since there used to be a great self contained program. e said "there just aren't any options around here for gifted children, much less for extremely gifted children" And since there also are only 2 private schools, both of which are not up to par, looks like we will be homeschooling probably at least kindergarten. I know it is a ways a way. 3 years if you count this school year till she could start, but when she has already mastered 50% of END of year skills for K5, it is hard to imagine asking her to sit and "learn" things she will have mastered 2 0r 3 years before.

Anyway, back to the ped appointment. Besides for her flu shot, all was well and she was happy. She brought her "surgical kit" and informed him "I want to be an orthopedic surgeon when I grow up" LOL. H1N1 shots won't be available till mid oct, but we will be going back then to get the for her.

As for homeschooling. It has been going great this week. We seem to finally be getting into a good routine. On top of montessori, she also LOVES the site, and asks to play her computer games, which reinforce the letter sounds she has learned.

In fact....yesterday we had a very proud moment when she sounded out a word, all by herself! "RAT" She was sooooo proud that she read it! It was great!

2500 words and counting LOL

It's been awhile, I gets crazy LOL.

Anyway on to the title of this post.......
that's how many words my child speaks, well lets say I quit counting at 2500. Average at 30 months....about 550 LOL.....Well I guess we know why she never shuts up LOL. I love the pbs development trackers, they break what a child should be doing by age and by category, language, literacy, science, math, etc. At DD's 2 year old appointment her pediatrician said she was cognitively on a 4 year old level. According to these charts she is 3 and 4 years ahead in language and literacy and 1 year ahead in math. We have an appointment with our new ped Tuesday and it will be interesting to hear what he has to say.

As for homeschooling.....

Things have been going well. I will say that after getting to know DD's learning style, we aren't doing strict montessori, we are using many of the materials and methods, but I would say we are also doing a lot of unschooling to. She loves the library so we have been getting many books on subjects she loves such as space and dinosaurs. She now knows all the planets and likes to tell people that "gravity keeps us on earth and not flying into space".
She also loves workbooks. She asked to do them.

We've been working on the Alphabet. DD know recognizes most upper and lowercase letters and now knows ALL of their sounds. She keeps asking to learn to read and is getting upset that she doesn't know the words. She has been picking out words in books now, so i don't think true reading is going to be far behind, especially since she wants to so badly. One thing I have learned about her.....if she wants to do something bad enough, she will figure out a way.

Lots of fun

So far it's going pretty well, but since A is just 2 and 1/2 I am kinda letting her do montessori some days when she is really into it and not pushing on others. Yesterday was an awesome day for it. She worked independently for a couple of hours doing the knobbed cylinders, in groups of 2 and 3, sand paper letters A-C and we read our phonics books for A-C as well. She did color box 2 (which is way to easy for her and I need to make box 3 tonight if i get time) We also did counting games which I made the other day and she loved. She can count to 25 now which is great. We are working on recognizing her numbers. After a good morning of montessori we took a walk and the history museum next door was having a garage sale. We got a play kitchen for $3! yep $3!. It needed cleaning and A and I spent an hour outside with the hose and Clorox but it is as good as new and up in her room. She is absolutely loving it.

On another note. A's Leap Frog Letter Factory came in the mail yesterday and she loves it! She has been asking me "teach me to read mommy" So I thought this would be a good start, and she seems to be spontaneously starting to read some as she is picking words out of books now that she knows.

This weekend we won't be doing much in the way of homeschooling since there is the huge boat regatta here this weekend and we live right in the midst of it all. There will be rides and a craft fair and my in laws are coming in. A should have fun with all the new experiences. We even went and watched some boats practicing today and she yelled "go racers!" She is so excited.

Well that's all for now. Thanks for reading lol.
