The view from my window and a poem

This is the view from my kitchen window one beautiful day last week. Isn't is gorgeous? This is why I love living here. These views, these moments, such joy and peace from God's creation.

A's poem say's it all.

Farm land landscapes.

Last Monday the kids in art class worked on watercolor farm landscapes. I introduced the terms horizon and vanishing point. I had the kids draw a horizon line and then a road through their farm land ending in a vanishing point.

We practiced creating different techniques by painting on dry and wet paper. The kids did great and created some really beautiful works.

Fat Tuesday and Maple Snow Candy equals a great day!

Laissez les bons temps roule!
Let the Good Times Roll! Happy Mardie Gras everyone from Alaska! This Louisiana girl was determined to celebrate despite being so far away.

I made a king cake, and it turned out pretty well. I was impressed at least because I tend to have problems with yeast bread rising enough.

We made masks!

A got a hold of my camera and took a couple of pics of me. Not to shabby.

My compliments of A

A's masks

We got fresh snow today! A couple of inches I think, but it is so hard to tell here because it drifts around so much. But it was enough to do what I had been wanting to do for the past several weeks. We made Maple Syrup Snow Candy! So awesome. You may remeber this from the little house series. I boiled the maple syrup for about 15 mins, until my thermometer read about 220 degrees. Then we carried it outside to a fresh snow drift and poured....Ta da!

It hardens almost instantly in the cold snow and because a scrumptious treat.

A stick to your teeth treat

But the wind picked up again and we brought our yummy snack inside to finish

Happy Fat Tuesday everyone!

My Art, A Bad Day, and a Bunch of Play

I was asked to donate a painting to the Channel 8 auction in town, and since I didn't have any canvas and it was to short notice to get some delivered, I pulled out this piece of driftwood that I have been just itching to paint. I finished it last night and it turned out pretty well I think. It is my take of the view from Pyramid Peak Valley at night.
I am dropping it off tomorrow, although I would love to keep it LOL. I just need to find another great piece to paint :)
What do ya'll think?

In other news....A was busy today. I had a pretty bad start to my morning....long story but it basically has to do with the fact that I have had no propane and have been unable to cook for 4 days....and well I don't appreciate people being childish and dragging me into something that I have absolutely nothing to do with. So while I had a meltdown and tears, A stayed busy reading and setting up a scene. But tonight I am just thankful to have such good friends who took care of me and who dried my laundry at their house, as well as the many offers of a warm meal. Late tonight propane was delivered and tomorrow I can make King Cake for my sweet child.
Anyway...on to the scene!

The ride of teddy's life! This is my old teddy, and this is the "Super Wire" A set up for him. Complete with Tupperware helmat....

After a bad morning, my afternoon got considerably better.
We had a great art class today. I taught watercolor landscapes, and we learned the about horizon lines and vanishing points. The kids did great and it is seriously just the most fun! I love my class. I will post some picks tomorrow, but for now....more play!
When we got home A headed out with our neighbors for an afternoon of play in the warm almost 40 degree weather.

Yep , thats my kid with the nurf crossbow! LOL. She's got pretty good aim too.

She came in after about 2 hours (I got a lot of cleaning done while she was out! Yay me!) and she played with some modeling clay and made me this beautiful sunflowe.

A movie, books, and then it was bed.
After she was asleep, Bella need to go out, and well, this is what I saw...

An amazingly clear night. The pics don't do it justice, but here is Orion. Probably one of the clearest nights in the almost 2 years we have been here.

Good night everyone. Tonight I go to sleep thankful for propane, and for the wonderful sweet friends I have meet since living here, who I know I can call crying and that I will always feel better when I get off the phone.

Oh! And Happy Mardi Gras Ya'll! Laissez les bon temps rouler!

Last week in school

So remember awhile back when I said I was going to try to document what we were doing each week in school? Well I totally feel behind doing that, but I am going to try to get back. I love reading what other homeschoolers are doing. I love gathering ideas and inspiration, and I like writing what we are doing...both for a record for myself, and maybe I can give a little ideas or inspirations to others. So anyway, without further is what we did last week in school, or at least what I took pics of! LOL

Right now we are having homeschool swim lessons twice a week. We have 3 lessons left, but I am thinking about having a teen we know who is on swim team continue lessons for her after since they are not offered again till fall.
A is loving it.

We are almost done with our 2nd grade spelling book. This week we worked on long O words.

We have been using Aleks math for the past 2 weeks and we LOVE it. For those who don't know it is a full online math curriculum for grades 3 through college. They have a free 2 month trial for homeschoolers so we decided to try it out while we are trying to figure out what we will be doing for math next year when we get funding from the state, and I am pretty sure I we have found it,

We are a little over 1/3 of the way through level 3, and A asks for it everyday. She signs on and starts to work....

but I still like to do some hands on stuff, so we do that to. Here's some other math we did through out the week...
probability practice

A little bit of money practice

Adding and Subtracting money and some more greater than/less than practice.

A has been devoring books as usual. This week she finished up Who Stole the Wizard of Oz and The Pain and the Great One: Going, Going, Gone, read another Franny K Stein: Mad Scientist book, started Pippi Longstocking, and read George Washington, Young Leader.

As I mentioned before, I wanted to help A get more comfortable with writing since that was the one thing she really asked to work on this year. So each week, she choses an animal from her poster book, reads the information about the animal and writes a short report.
I ask her to pretend she is writing to me about it and I know nothing of this animal. The we brainstorm what sort of things she thinks I would need to know and I write those ideas down, ie...what kind of animal is it, what it looks like, where it lives, what it eats, etc. She then works on her report. This is a favorite way to end her week.
This week she chose a cougar.

We also finished up our study on habitats and adaptation, and are starting on the human body this week. I am sure that will take up numerous weeks here for my future little ortho surgeon! LOL

So that's our school week in a nutshell.

A Winter Life

We had a great, but busy, week here, so it was nice this weekend to get out of the house and just play! Oh how I can't wait to have my car back and be not as tied to the house for so long. Soon I think, soon. Patience is not my strong suit ;)

Well Saturday was a beautiful day with just a slight breeze just soft enough to cause the air to nip at our bare cheeks. We headed out as a family to one of our favorite places and just Ran!

Run, play, create....nature at it's best

Snow Angle Fun
Best Buds
Finding green!
"The Ice Age is Upon Us....Survive or Perish"

Attack of the SNOW MONSTER!

Giant Snowball Play

With which she promptly buried me in snow....
A beautiful life.
Well Lived
With Love, Life, and Laughter
